In the northern side of the Vác Danube Bend, directly on the left bank of the river, lies Nógrádverőce. The ridge of the White Mountain (Fehér-hegy) in the east runs parallel with the Danube. South of the mountain slope is a relatively narrow lowland, the so-called Danube field (Dunamező). A hill has risen in the middle of this lowland, about 1 km away, in the high Danube foothills, which has been named Kereszt-domb (Cross Hill) after the wooden cross standing on it. In the Danube side of the hill, Roman wall blocks peep out, the ruins of which, according to tradition, have been registered as the "Régi hídfő" ("Old Bridgehead").

On this prehistoric site, the late Roman fortress was built, the ruins of which are hidden under the Hill of the Cross. The results of the excavations and conservation work carried out in 1934 can still be seen today, marked by the wall blocks. Most probably, the ruins have come to light from the huge 23-metre-long castle built by Emperor Valentinus, which has a rectangular shape and whose long side is parallel with the Danube. Over the centuries, floods and ice have torn apart in monumental blocks the walls, 320 centimetres wide at the bottom and 280 centimetres wide at the top, on the long side overlooking the Danube.

The Hungarian stretch of the Danube Limes is considered to be an outstanding monument of Roman military architecture and border-protecting strategic conception, which was in operation for over 400 years, and was a very important factor in the spread of ancient Greco-Roman material and spiritual culture, merchandise, technologies and religious thought within the empire and also in the direction of Barbaricum. It is the witness of the military actions and political processes that determine the history of the whole Roman Empire. The application of 4 countries in January 2019 has included 98 sites in the Danube Valley along a route of about 1000 kilometres, 65 of which are in Hungary. The area of what is now Transdanubia was part of the Roman Empire for several centuries. The natural border of Pannonia was the Danube. The system of fortifications and watchtowers built on the banks of the Danube, or rather the military stationed there in large numbers, provided the protection of the province.

Rome has pooped. A vast system of protection crossed the whole of Europe, separating one of the greatest civilisations of the age from the barbarians, but this system cannot be compared to the Great Wall of China, as it functioned as a frontier, protecting against raiders, thieves and smugglers. A fast-moving force with horses helped the small military group in the watchtowers, and along the rivers the Water Limes with its many watchtowers protected the empire.

Pannonia was one of the most vulnerable points of the empire. There were two important parts of the frontier: the bend of the Danube Bend and Szentendre Island, where a ford crossed the river.

The Emperor's aim was to fortify the Limes in these territories in order to protect them from neighbouring peoples, from the Sarmatians and the Quadians.

Navigation and water were of strategic importance throughout the territory of the Empire. In the interest of securing clear, healthy water, the Romans made significant building investments, erecting monumental engineering buildings to enable them to carry clear water from its source to the point of use. At the point of use, the spring water was used for washing and heating outside the drinking water. the ruin presented stands on the considerable water base of the present Danube Bend, so the comparison has a great significance, revealing the changes in water use over the last 2000 years. it was demonstrated with the XXI century water exhibition with the help of the gAG DMRV on the floor in the exhibition centre.

The Danube Bend will attract more tourists to Verőce with a new tourist experience, making this Roman Limes a good starting point for both pedestrians and cyclists. The proximity of the reopened harbour and the educational trail leading to it can ensure tourists an easy and comfortable journey to Verőce by boat or train, while the bicycle rental service will offer them the opportunity to enjoy other beautiful experiences without their own bicycles.
